Oliver Stone a Hit at Marrakech Fest

MARRAKECH, Morocco (Hollywood Reporter) – Oliver Stone and Colin Farrell provoked a media scrum Monday night as they arrived at the Marrakech International Film Festival to talk up the Alexander the Great epic, which Stone is shooting just outside the city.

Stone was in an expansive mood at a packed media conference on both his current film and his recent documentary about Cuban leader Fidel Castro, “Commandante.”

Stone received a tribute from the festival Monday evening, followed by a screening of “Commandante” in the sublime setting of a ruined palace within the city’s medieval walls.

HBO co-produced the 90-minute film, but the cable channel pulled the documentary in May after Castro had three hijackers executed and imprisoned some 70 dissidents. Stone was asked to return to Cuba to reinterview the longstanding Cuban president.

“It was probably one of the lowest points of my life to be censored in America,” Stone said. “That is a rare document, and I don’t know why it can’t be seen by the American people.”

sigh… where to begin?

How about just this:

Ollie, you wouldn’t recognize “censorship” if it pistol-whipped you in front of your family, and then put a bullet in your head in a public execution. Which, by a startling coincidence, is pretty much what would happen to you in Cuba if you made a film critical of Castro.

Western Lefties are arguably at their most (unintentionally) hilarious when they suck up to Old Beardo. This guy is an unreconstructed Communist maniac and assassin, who happily executes political dissidents and throws gay people in jail. And yet they Love Him! They really do! As long as he’s anti-U.S., he’s the bee’s knees.

Makes you wonder if there’s anything–anything–Castro could do which would turn the left against him.

Let’s have a little thought experiment:

Question: What would turn Canadian conservatives against George W Bush?

Answer: Instituting wage and price controls, a la Nixon. Or maybe giving Quebec the rights to CF-18 maintenance (joke!joke!).

Question: What would turn Canadian socialists against Fidel Castro?

Answer:

Okay, so that last one was obviously “over the top”.
