Very scary article at National Review Online by Peter Augustine Lawler. He presents an entirely credible theory explaining how Hillary Clinton could become President.

He outlines Howard Dean’s inevitable failure in a general election, positing instead that Gen. Wesley “What does Kofi Annan think?” Clark would be a much more viable candidate. Lawler points out that Clark already has the support of the Democratic Party establishment (i.e. Slick Willie and She Who Must Be Obeyed). But why doesn’t Hillary just run herself? After all…

[t]he main stumbling block to [Clark's] success would be Hillary entering the race. As far as I can tell, her judgment is that the risk for her at this point is too high. She surely secretly hopes for a narrow Democratic defeat next year to clear the way for her in 2008. But political results can't be engineered that precisely, and don't be surprised if she doesn't adopt the amazingly low-risk strategy of making herself available as Clark's running mate. That would make her the presumptive nominee in either 2008 or 2012, depending on the general's skill and fortune.

Why would the senator give up her all the influence that comes from having a safe seat from one of our largest states? The former First Lady could hardly be fulfilled as a mere senator; her real ambition is to be president. And whomever Clark picks as his vice-presidential candidate — if the ticket is elected — would have immediate advantages in the struggle to succeed him. Hillary can't count on that person not catching on. And no insider Democratic senator has won the party's presidential nomination under the present primary-nomination system. If Mrs. Clinton wants to be president, she'll want to be on the Clark ticket.

Okay, NOW I’m frightened. I hope my Dear Close Friends and Neighbours to the South of Me understand what a hideously poor President Mrs. Bill would make. We already had our own Canadian version of Hillary–namely Pierre Eliot Trudeau–and believe me it wasn’t pretty. A Utopian socialist who used the media’s love affair with his stage persona to remake the country’s politics.

Trudeau sucked up to Castro, decimated the Canadian military, and ruined our economy for a decade or more. He stabbed into our body politic a vast array of expensive social programs which continue to bleed us to this day. But most devastatingly, he created the modern Canadian political/psychological garment: the Northern Socialist, U.N.-loving, medicare-dependent, America-hating, dictator-coddling hat that every Canuck must wear by law. The guy even hated ice hockey, for pete’s sake. A**hole.

Hillary is Trudeau.

Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid.
